Costs
The cost of implant removal and replacement varies depending on the complexity of the procedure and the individual patient’s needs.
Simple implant replacement starts from $18,000 and includes surgeon’s fee, leading brand implants, hospital and theatre fees, anaesthetist’s fee, assistant fee and post-operative follow-up.
Where additional procedures such as capsulectomy, fat grafting or mastopexy are required, costs will be adjusted accordingly.

Consultation and pre-operative planning
Planning for implant removal and replacement involves two consultations at our Mornington rooms with Dr Lee and his experienced team of plastic surgery nurses.
Understanding your reasons for surgery, whether aesthetic or health-related, is key to creating a plan that meets your goals. Implant selection, the need for capsule removal, and adjunctive procedures such as fat grafting or breast lift (mastopexy) are all considered.
Our team will take detailed measurements and photographs to help plan the right surgical approach for your body and goals.
Our nurses will also assist with preparation for surgery, provide detailed pre- and post-operative information, and answer any questions you may have.
Surgical technique
Implant removal and replacement is performed in an accredited hospital operating theatre under general anaesthesia.
Depending on the reason for removal, Dr Lee may perform a simple exchange through your existing scar, or a more complex procedure such as total capsulectomy, where the scar tissue surrounding the implant is entirely removed.
The inframammary fold incision is most commonly used for safe access, precise dissection, and optimal scar concealment.
Where necessary, intraoperative sizers are used to ensure appropriate replacement and symmetry. Dr Lee also offers fat grafting at the time of replacement to enhance contours and provide soft-tissue support.
After surgery, you will be monitored in recovery before being discharged with personalised care instructions.
Recovery and results
Many patients can go home on the same day of surgery. Whether you stay overnight or not, individualised recovery protocols will be provided.
Compression bras are supplied to help minimise swelling and support healing. These should be worn continuously for 2 weeks, and during the day for another 2–4 weeks.
Pain is well managed with local anaesthetic used during surgery and prescribed medications for home.
Follow-up appointments are scheduled before surgery and details provided in your discharge paperwork.
Post-procedure timeline

Dr Lee will review you in hospital prior to discharge. At home, rest is recommended with light activities only. Avoid lifting over 1kg. Gentle arm movements are safe.

A clinic visit is scheduled to change dressings and assess healing. Swelling and breast fullness are expected and will settle gradually.

Further dressing changes and commencement of scar therapy with micropore tape. Driving can usually resume.

Final shape and implant position will be assessed at the 6-week and 3-month visits. A return to full activity is usually safe after 6 weeks.
Other considerations

As with all surgery, complications can occur but are rare in the hands of an experienced team.
The most common issues relate to capsular contracture, where the natural capsule around the implant hardens and distorts breast shape.
Surgical refinements including total capsulectomy, no-touch implant handling, and antibiotic irrigation have significantly reduced this risk.
Other potential risks include infection, bleeding, altered sensation, asymmetry and scarring.
These will all be discussed in detail at your consultation, and you will be supported closely throughout your recovery.
